Medical Assistant (Part-Time)

The General Surgery Medical Assistant position is part-time, typically 12 hours per week, and is onsite at Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center.

  • Monday & Thursday 8:00 A.M. - 2:00 P.M

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under the direction of a provider(s), assist with patient care, assessment, and procedures.
  • Facilitate the efficient flow of patients through the clinic.
  • Serve as a critical link between the providers and patients by managing patient phone calls and communicating testing results, surgery schedules, procedures, etc.
  • Provide patient education regarding their condition. Facilitate a professional, personable, and efficient atmosphere for the clinic.
  • Collaborate with primary care providers in the treatment and well-being of all patients.
  • Obtain vital signs, nursing history, and physical assessment
  • Review lab results and process information to the appropriate provider.
  • Document patient care, procedures, and patient assessments in medical and clinic records. Obtain pre-certifications when necessary
  • Complete patient care assignments based on illness severity, professional practice scope, and individual strengths and weaknesses.
  • Maintain neat and clean patient exam rooms and work areas; followed infection control policies and procedures in cleaning equipment and all areas of the clinic.
  • Participate in quality assessment and performance improvement activities.
  • If applicable, maintain an orderly sample drug supply room and ensure appropriate documentation regarding the dispensing of sample drugs.
  • Work as a team with other members of the clinic to ensure the highest quality of care at all times.
  • To maximize productivity and positive employee relations, demonstrate positive interpersonal relations in dealings with fellow employees, patients, and providers.
  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality in accordance with clinic policy.
  • Other duties are as required and assigned by the providers or operations team. On occasion, they may be unrelated to the position described here.

Job Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE:

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma required. Medical Assistant or Nursing Assistant certification preferred. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.

EXPERIENCE:

  • General surgery experience is preferred. At least 2 years of experience in a physician clinic setting is preferred.

SPECIFIC SKILLS:

  • Intermediate computer skills required. Must have the ability to appropriately handle confidential information. Must be knowledgeable in general surgery practices and procedures and the laws, regulations, and guidelines governing a clinic setting. Must have excellent professional verbal and written communication skills. Knowledge of hazardous materials used in the clinic is required. Knowledge of effective body mechanics to prevent injury is required. Must be able to work in new situations, grasp new ideas, and adapt to new procedures. Must have the ability to evaluate available data and come to sound conclusions.
